PetroCom brands division as
UpLit Telecommunications company links the Gulf South
with fiber connectivity, satellite broadcast via teleport,
mobile satellite truck
NEW ORLEANS, LA.—(June 10, 2005)—When
television viewers around the country recently heard
the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season forecast from the
National Hurricane Center, UpLit, a little-known telecommunications
company from New Orleans, made it possible.
The news conference and satellite media tour, marking
the start of the first National Hurricane Preparedness
Week, took place at the Stennis Airport in Mississippi;
but because of UpLit it was broadcast on national news
channels such as MSNBC and CNN and regionally to viewers
of stations in Pensacola, Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte,
Dallas and Beaumont, Texas.
Formerly known as Louisiana International Teleport,
UpLit, a division of PetroCom LLC, is the only satellite
communications company offering video and telecommunications
connectivity in the Gulf South via satellite, fiber
and wireless services. PetroCom recently initiated
a new brand identity launch for UpLit, including a
new look, logo and Web site. The Web site, www.ExceedtheFeed.com,
provides a detailed description of the range of connectivity
services the company provides.
“Differentiating UpLit from PetroCom increases
its visibility in the commercial business environment
and expands their recognition and dominance in the
industry,” PetroCom Chief Executive Officer Ken
Wright said.
UpLit was launched in 2002 to provide satellite-broadcasting
services of the New Orleans Hornets games to Cox Communications’ regional
cable systems. The relationship led to the creation
of the 24/7 regional sports network, Cox Sports Television,
which UpLit now distributes to over 60 cable systems
in the Gulf South. Through its satellite and fiber
network, UpLit broadcasts New Orleans Hornets basketball,
New Orleans Voodoo arena football, New Orleans Zephyrs
minor league baseball and other college and regional
sporting events, including the recent NCAA Baton Rouge
Regional college baseball tournament from LSU’s
Alex Box Stadium.
“We’re pleased to work with such an accessible
and highly skilled team of engineers and technicians,” said
Rod Mickler, Cox Sports vice president of Regional
Sports. “UpLit provides us with the resources
we need to service our 1 million CST subscribers.”
UpLit has provided mobile satellite and engineering
services to ESPN, NBC, Bloomberg Television and other
major television networks. Additionally it is a resource
for entertainment and convention venues such as the
Louisiana Superdome and the Ernest N. Morial Convention
Center. UpLit served as the satellite transmission
provider for the huge German software company SAP during
its U.S. sales conference held in New Orleans last
year, broadcasting keynote speakers and satellite media
tours to news agencies around the world.
In addition to broadcast services, UpLit also will
provide disaster recovery and emergency response services
for wireless network carriers and government entities,
extending Petrocom’s telecommunications expertise
to other vertical markets.
PetroCom is a pioneer in wireless voice and data communication
for the offshore oil and gas industry. With headquarters
in New Orleans and offices in Houston and Lafayette,
PetroCom is a full-service telecommunications and network
solutions company and the largest cellular provider
in the Gulf, with a coverage area stretching from Brownsville,
Texas, to Mobile, Ala., and as far offshore as 180
miles.
